Where do you get you get your UHIP card?
You can easily pick up your UHIP card from the York International office at 200 York Lanes.
What is UHIP?
UHIP is a compulsory health insurance plan for all international students, exchange students, new permanent residents and returning Canadians who are not covered by the Ontario Health Insurance Plan - OHIP (http://www.health.gov.on.ca).
Since the plan is compulsory, students are advised not to purchase another health insurance plan to cover them while in Canada. UHIP is also compulsory for all eligible dependents, including a partner, spouse and/or children.
UHIP is comparable (not equivalent) to OHIP in that UHIP provides coverage for the same services that OHIP provides coverage for. However, depending upon where you go to obtain health services you are not guaranteed to be fully covered for the entire cost under the UHIP plan. Please refer to the section on "Accessing Health Services" for more information.
What is covered by UHIP?
UHIP pays up to $1,000,000 a year for each member for the cost of eligible medically necessary health services and medical treatments. UHIP Provides Coverage for:
- Doctor's and specialists' services at home, in a hospital or institution, or in the physician's office
- Annual health examination, including gynaecological exam
- Diagnosis and treatment of illness and injury
- Surgery, including the administration of anaesthetics
- Care related to pregnancy (prenatal and postnatal), even if pregnancy began before arrival in Ontario
Contact Sun Life at 1-866-500-UHIP (8447) or email at askus@sunlife.com or refer to the UHIP website at http://www.uhip.ca/ for more details regarding UHIP coverage.
What is NOT Covered by UHIP?
- Prescriptions drugs
- Routine eye exams for persons between the ages of 20-65
- Physiotherapy
- Eyeglasses, frames or contact lenses
- Dental care services
- Acupuncture
- Chiropractor services
- Medical examinations and tests required for immigration purposes or a third party cosmetic surgery
- Preparation of records, reports, certificates, or communications
